MIXED CHICKS JOINS AS SILVER SPONSOR OF

FESTIVAL CELEBRATING MIXED-RACE FAMILIES

LOS ANGELES, CA-May 24, 2016 – Mixed Chicks, the leading hair care product line for curly hair, has signed on as a Silver Sponsor of the Mixed Remixed Festival, the nation’s largest gathering of mixed-race and multiracial families and artists. The Festival will take place at the Japanese American National Museum in downtown Los Angeles (100 N. Central Avenue), June 10-11, 2016.

Now in its third year, the Festival celebrates stories of multiracial Americans and families, the fastest growing demographic in the U.S. A free public event, the Festival brings together film and book lovers, innovative and emerging artists, and multiracial and multicultural families and individuals for workshops, readings, performances, and film screenings.

“It is an honor to have Mixed Chicks as a sponsor,” says Durrow who calls herself an Afro-Viking because she is African-American and Danish. “The company’s products directly reflect the diversity of the Mixed experience which is very much the American experience.” The company’s founders will also participate in a special panel presentation—Naturally Curly or Straight Hair Curious: Tips and Talk about “Biracial” Hair–on June 11, 2016 at 10:00am.

The Festival, a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization, is produced by Durrow a New York Times best-selling writer, and a talented team of volunteers.

In 2015, the Mixed Remixed Festival attracted close to 700 people from across the country and featured dozens of writers, scholars and performers including Comedy Central’s Al Madrigal and New York Times best-selling author Jamie Ford.

FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

The Festival hosts the largest West Coast Loving Day Celebration, Saturday, June 11, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. with the annual Storyteller’s Prize presentation and live show. The Festival will present the Storyteller’s Prize to film and TV star Taye Diggs and his collaborator, Shane Evans, for their ground-breaking children’s book Mixed Me as part of a dynamic live show featuring comedians, musicians, and spoken-word poets. Diggs and Evans will be available to sign books directly after the prize presentation.
Families can enjoy interactive craft activities, free face painting and storytelling events as part of the JANM Free Family Day.

The Festival will present several notable short films including the award-winning Fall Seven Times Get Up Eight: Japanese War Brides (dirs. Kraft, Kasmauski, Tolbert), a documentary about three Japanese women who immigrated to the US to raise their Hapa kids. Chill (dir. Jennifer Frappier), a press-darling documentary about egg-freezing screens at Mixed Remixed. Immediately following each screening, there will be a Q & A session with the filmmakers.

The Festival includes author readings by New York Times bestselling author Jamie Ford (Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet; Songs of Willow Frost); Sunil Yapa, the author of the breakout national bestseller, The Heart Is A Muscle the Size of Your Fist; Natashia Deon, author of the acclaimed debut novel, Grace; the celebrated writer and activist Willy Wilkinson; and many others. The Mixed Remixed Festival Altered the Course of My Life: A Mixed-Race Writer’s Story

Just over two years ago, I received an email from Mixed Remixed founder Heidi Durrow, stating I’d been selected as a featured writer for that year’s festival. Heidi had no idea that her choice would come to transform my entire life.

I knew I wanted to be part of the Festival as far back as 2008, when Heidi ran a festival under a different name. Back then, I was immersed in my grad school program on the East Coast and didn’t have anything creative to show. Instead, I became a chair at the Critical Mixed Race Studies Conference in 2012 and presented my master’s thesis about the “tragic mulatta narrative.” While CMRS was amazing, I kept tabs on Heidi’s work and waited for her to reemerge with a festival project. When she finally started Mixed Remixed, I sent in my submission around midnight on the very last day of open applications.

All throughout grad school, I wrestled with a dual existence. I liked academia, but I couldn’t stop writing a memoir about my relationship with my black father who had died in 2001. My thesis no doubt helped spark this fever, as reading the works of Nella Larsen, Danzy Senna and Heidi herself made me desperate to share my own mixed race story.

In fact, Heidi helped fuel my desire to fuse my two worlds of literature and race even before I knew who she was. In the pages of the canonical book Black, White, Other, Heidi and others shared their experiences about being mixed race. The book came out in 1994 and I read it like the Bible, desperate then find race mirrors in my every day life.

When I received my acceptance from Heidi, I was at the end of a yearlong relationship, was teaching at an after school program, and had just been accepted to an intensive teaching credential program at San Jose State. Every time I stepped onto the SJSU campus, I felt overwhelmed by dread, and every time I told my students at the after school program to follow their dreams, I felt like a hypocrite. I had known I wanted to become a full-fledged writer since I was seven years old.

As fate would have it, or perhaps just good luck, my then boyfriend broke up with me and left me in a pile of tears. Once I wiped them away, I got back to work on my memoir and found letters from my father from 2000 and 2001, advising me to pursue an untraditional career path in the Arts. I practiced my reading for the festival on my coworkers at the after school program, and the look of wonder in their eyes was one I’d never seen before. The day before the festival, I stopped by my ex-boyfriend’s apartment to drop off his things, and then continued down 101 with a resolve to put my career before any relationship goals.

I fell in love with Mixed Remixed, and I fell in love with L.A. The reactions from the audience at our little reading (Mixed Remixed has big readings now) made me feel like my story was their story. Audience members came up to me after the reading, and I got validation not only as a writer, but as a mixed race writer as well. For the first time in my life, I knew my story had merit, not just to those looking in from the outside, but also to those who share the same mixed up DNA as myself. And theirs was the validation I needed.

By fall, I had transferred to one of the after school program’s L.A. County branches and began crafting my freelance career. By the next fall, I published an article in the online magazine For Harriet, called “What It Means to be Mixed Race During the Fight for Black Lives,” which discusses being mixed race during the increased coverage of police brutality. With this article I experienced the life changing nature of a viral story. I received personal messages, retweets and Facebook shares from mixed race people across the globe. They told me I had been able to put their thoughts into words in a way that finally made sense to them.

I also received an inundation of criticism from black and mixed-race men and women who all tried to define me in different ways. Some claimed I was black, some claimed I was mixed race. Some said I was delusional. Others said I was stuck up. Throughout all this backlash, I was able to keep a level head, largely because I knew I was part of a mixed race community, full of people whose identities had also been questioned and who knew the only way to stay sane is to remain true to your own self-perception.

Mixed Remixed has changed my life in other ways as well. I’ve made friendships, some of which I know will last a lifetime. I’ve networked with other writers, as well as filmmakers and musicians. I’ve found a home at a yearly event that stays with me all year long, and my life in L.A. is made sweeter by the connections I’ve made inside those doors.

After my viral article a mixed race writer named Sarah, whom I hadn’t met before, asked me to write an educators’ guide to accompany the biracial anthology she wrote with a co-author named Bryony. Last year I volunteered at the festival, and this year I’ll be meeting Sarah and Bryony, who are now friends and coming out from Puerto Rico and England, respectively. They’ll be panelists at the event, and we’ll be selling both their anthology and the educators’ guide, the latter of which is about to hit the shelves.

I can’t wait to walk through those doors in June and see what’s in store for this year’s festival. I knew no one my first year, and my second year I knew just a few from the year before. This June I’m excited to reconnect with a growing number of friends and acquaintances, and I look forward to meeting new members of the Mixed Remixed family. Heidi has built a veritable wonderland for mixed race folks, and through her hard work and passion she continues to change lives.

As I set off for the AWP writers’ conference, I knew there was one panel I didn’t want to miss, it was called: “What are you? Mixed-Race Writers Find Voice and Community” and featured five mixed-race writers, including Chris Terry and Aaron Samuels, who I’d met at the Mixed Remixed Festival. This question, “what are you?” is familiar to many of us, and I love the way Heidi Durrow helps to reclaim it on every episode of her Mixed Experience podcast

The AWP panel was great – the panellists read from their work, which was inspiring, as was the dialogue that followed it. We talked about whether or not mixed-race writers leap across writing genres the way we broach so many other boundaries. Aaron Samuels even asked if any of us were ‘genre non-binary’, which made me smile. F. Douglas Brown talked about the assumption that if you’re mixed that you have a white half or part, when in fact your mixes may be both non-white. Suzi F. Garcia noted the difference between ‘how you identify versus how you’re treated’, which definitely struck a chord with me. Meanwhile Casey Rocheteau liked “the namelessness. I like being undefined because you get to define things for yourself.”

After years of rejecting his Asian American identity, a grandson attempts to reconnect with his culture through the customs and traditions of his grandmother.

Matthew Hashiguchi is an Assistant Professor in Multimedia Film & Production at Georgia Southern University and a documentary filmmaker whose work focuses on the diverse cultural, social and ethnic stories of American society. In May 2013, his short documentary film, People Aren’t All Bad, screened at the American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the Cannes Film Festival and was also a finalist for Smithsonian Magazine’s 2014 In Motion Video Contest. Another film, The Lower 9, received a grant and Second Place Gold Circle Award from The Caucus for Producers, Writers and Directors Foundation and an award for Best Short Documentary at the Spring 2012 Asians on Film Festival.

Matthew recently completed Good Luck Soup, a transmedia documentary project on the relocation and assimilation of Japanese Americans after leaving the internment camps that is told through both a feature-length film and a web-based, interactive documentary.

Invisible Roots: Afro-Mexicans in Southern California

Mexico is home to many African-descended peoples who have now immigrated to Southern California. Through intimate portraits, members of three Afro-Mexican families discuss what it means to be Mexican with African roots, roots that are often forgotten, denied and frequently despised.

Lizz is a recent graduate of the University of Southern California and is pursuing a career in film, television, and communication. Influenced by her experience as a photographer and editor, Lizz has ventured into creating both fiction and non-fiction film narratives. Her ultimate goals are to create content that challenges viewers’ thought processes and invites social change.

Tiffany Walton is a Los Angeles-based independent filmmaker. As a writer and producer, Tiffany creates content for the lifestyle site, SkinGab. She is a recent graduate of USC’s Annenberg Graduate School of Journalism. Tiffany first became familiar with Afro-Mexicans after seeing Tony Gleaton’s photography of the African presence in Mexico, while she was a teen. Later, she read an article in the LA Times, by John Mitchell, about Afro-Mexicans living in Southern California and wanted to learn more about their stories.

Anna Suzuki is a NYC-based comedian, actor, and writer. Credits include Orange is the New Black, High Maintenance (HBO), I am Michael (with James Franco, Zachary Quinto). Currently Anna is part of the all-Asian sketch team, Azn Pop, and co-host of the variety show/podcast, The Soul Glo Project. Harris, Evoking the Mulatto is a transmedia project exploring black mixed identity in the 21st century, through the lens of the history of racial classification in the United States. Featuring filmed interviews with young artists and activists, photographic portraits, and historical mappings, this web-based interactive video art project seeks to address a relevant contemporary issue by glimpsing at its chronicle.

Lindsay Catherine Harris is a Brooklyn-based media maker, activist, and educator. Originally from the Southwest, Lindsay works to create multimedia projects exploring identity, presence, and history. She has also designed and taught programs in new media, digital storytelling, art, and social justice to young people at museums and community-based orgs around NYC, currently expanding youth programs at the Brooklyn Museum. She holds a B.A. in Africana Studies & Art from Vassar College and M.A. in Arts Politics from NYU. She has received the Flaherty Film Seminar Fellowship and Black Public Media Digital Arts Fellowship. She is also one of the 2016 Laundromat Project Create Change Fellows.

This is a special film screening and reading that focuses on what it means to be mixed and considering parenthood. The program will screen the short documentary, Chill, dir. Jennifer Frappier and feature a reading by Faith Adiele. Immediately following the screening and reading, we’ll discuss how reproduction, fertility and mixed-race identity play into questions about becoming a parent.

Faith Adiele is author of the memoirs, The Nigerian-Nordic Girl’s Guide to Lady Problems and Meeting Faith, which won the PEN Open Book Award. She is also writer/narrator/subject of My Journey Home, a PBS documentary about her mixed family, and editor of Coming of Age Around the World: A Multicultural Anthology. She teaches at VONA: Summer Workshops for Writers of Color, California College of the Arts, and The San Francisco Writers’ Grotto.

Chill is a touching documentary about a single woman fighting to preserve her dreams of motherhood through egg freezing in her mid-thirties. Weeks before she decided to freeze her eggs, actor, Jennifer Frappier began documenting her thoughts on fertility and parenthood. Throughout the film, Jennifer shares her story with vulnerability, courage and humor. Chill is more than a film; it’s a mindset. It’s about determination, living with intention and being true to yourself. This story is as original as it is relatable and when it comes to fertility, educational as it is eye opening. Ultimately, Chill is an inspirational film about hope, love and family.

Jennifer can be seen in national commercials for companies such as: Anheuser-Busch, Comcast, iChooseAdoption, McDonald’s, Microsoft, Skechers and Sony PSP. Jennifer is excited to share her first documentary. Chill is a film that introduces “social egg freezing” and follows the modern-day journey to motherhood. Writing is tough. Publishing is a difficult process with a steep learning curve. Writing your own life story comes with the additional pressure of being deeply personal. The closeness of the self to the manuscript can make every part of the writing and publishing processes harder. This panel discussion about the panelists’ experiences writing and publishing memoirs. Maria T. Allocco is a writer, artist and teacher born after a South Korean woman and an Italian Catholic priest fell in love. An Academy of American Poets Prize recipient and Voices of Our Nation alum, Maria’s work has been featured on radio, and most recently in the book Pariahs: Writing From Outside The Margins. Maria co-founded the bay area’s first mixed-race meditation group, and the writing group Mixed Writes. She teaches yoga to youth.

Jackson Bliss is a hapa writer of (non)fiction. His work has appeared in Tin House, Antioch Review, Boston Review, ZYZZYVA, Kenyon Review, Fiction, Santa Monica Review, Quarterly West, African American Review, Fiction International, STAND, Quarter After Eight, Connecticut Review, Daily Dot, and Kartika Review, among others. He is a lecturer at UC Irvine and was the 1st Runner-up for the 2013 Poets & Writer’s California Writer’s Exchange Award in fiction.

Leslie Li is the director of the feature-length documentary — The Kim Loo Sisters — about a jazz vocal quartet popular in the 1930s and 40s who became the first Asian American act to star in Broadway musical revues. The “Kimmies” as the sisters were called are her mother and her three maternal aunts. Leslie is also the author of Bittersweet: A Novel (Tuttle Publishing); Daughter of Heaven: A Memoir with Earthly Recipes (Arcade Publishing); and Just Us Girls: The Companion Book to The Kim Loo Sisters (Four Seasons Press).

Victoria Namkung is a hapa Los Angeles-based journalist, essayist, and cultural commentator. Her writing has been published in the Los Angeles Times, VICE, Washington Post, USA Today, and Huffington Post. She currently appears on episodes of Mike Epps’ AOL Originals series, That’s Racist. Her debut novel, The Things We Tell Ourselves, examines the damage that one generation can do to the next and the compromises we make between our ideals and life’s realities.

Joy Huang Stoffers was raised in East Brunswick, NJ, by a Taiwanese mother and a Caucasian father. At the age of six, she wrote, illustrated, and promptly recycled her first short story. Since then she dreamed of becoming a novelist. She holds a BA in English from Rutgers University and an MA in Creative Writing from Newcastle University.

Eleanor Glewwe is the author of the middle-grade fantasy novel Sparkers (Viking, 2014) and its forthcoming companion, Wildings (Viking, Nov. 2016). She lives in Los Angeles, where she is a graduate student in linguistics.

Maria Leonard Olsen is a biracial woman whose parents were forbidden by law to marry in Maryland in the early 1960s. She is a lawyer, journalist, radio show host and author of the children’s book, “Mommy, Why’s Your Skin So Brown?” and two others. A UVA Law School graduate, Maria served in the Clinton Administration’s Justice Department, fostered newborns awaiting adoption, and has been on the boards of Children’s National Medical Center BOV, among others.

Veda Stamps is the author of acclaimed novel Flexible Wings. Stamps has spent much of her adult life working on projects that empower diverse youth to achieve their dreams. Flexible Wings, her first novel, is a creative extension of her work as co-owner of a city planning firm. She currently lives with her husband, daughter, and three little dogs in southern California.

Kyla Kupferstein Torres is an educator and writer in New York City. Kyla has broad experience in education; she has held positions at top schools, and created college preparation programs in high-poverty communities, targeted at low-income and first-generation students. Her writing is concerned with issues of identity and how personal stories inform our choices. She is a frequent consultant to and speaker at education and parenting advocacy groups. She is a member of the Mixed Remixed Festival Board of Directors.

Kevin Maillard is Professor of Law at Syracuse University and a contributing editor to the New York Times. He specializes in Family Law, Constitutional Law, and Popular Culture. He writes for The Atlanticand provides on-air commentary to ABC News and MSNBC. He is the co-editor of Loving v. Virginia in a Post-Racial World (with Rose Villazor, Cambridge 2012). An enrolled member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, he is the author of the forthcoming children’s book, FRY BREAD.

Devin Wash was born and raised in Los Angeles and he graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara with a B.A. in Economics. He obtained his CA Real Estate license and is now a mortgage broker with Rosano Partners in downtown LA. He specializes in debt and equity placement for all types of commercial real estate.

Sarah Ratliff and Bryony Sutherland are the co-authors and editors of Being Biracial: Where Our Secret Worlds Collide, an anthology comprising 24 essays that examine and compare the mixed race experience from the viewpoint of either multiracial people or parents of mixed race kids. Along with Sarah, who lives in Puerto Rico, and Bryony, who lives in England, the contributors span five continents and the Caribbean. Being Biracial is currently being adapted for academic use.

Mia Nakaji Monnier is a writer whose work has appeared in The Boston Globe, The Rumpus, Mental Floss, Hyphen Magazine, and more. She has been hapa in California, haafu in Japan, and one of the “half-Japanese girls” from that Weezer song in Texas, among other identities in many other hometowns.

Jewel Love is a psychotherapist of Afro-Euro-Native American descent. He serves multicultural populations in the San Francisco Bay Area, and incorporates music and dance into his healing modality.

Edward Pohlert is a multiethnic immigrant born in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1966 from Amsterdam and has lived in Argentina, Los Angeles, Hawaii, and San Diego. Edward attended and graduated from the Los Angeles public school system. Now, 41 years later, he’s a 1st generation college graduate with an advanced degree in cultural psychology working with a diverse group of students at MiraCosta Community College.

Maya Washington is an award-winning filmmaker, actress, playwright, poet, and arts educator making a difference in the world. She received a BA from the University of Southern California and an MFA from Hamline University. Her work has garnered fellowships and/or awards from the Jerome Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, Minnesota Film and Television, and others. Maya is dedicated to projects that have a sense of “purpose” in the world, selecting stories that illuminate some aspect of the human experience that is untold, rarely seen, or might benefit from new approaches to issues of diversity and inclusion, primarily in America.

Claudine Cooper is a Los Angeles based fitness expert, trainer and community health advocate.Born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Claudine is a dynamic woman who has created a lifestyle that promotes optimum mental and physical health. Claude Knobler is the author of the parenting memoir, More Love-Less Panic: 7 Lessons About Life, Love and Parenting I Learned After We Adopted Our Ethiopian Son. His work has also been featured in the Washington Post, Time Magazine and on NPR.

Crystal Ksenjak is the creator and owner of Raising Our Blussian, a Mommy blog where she details her family life, reviews hair products for biracial/mixed children, and why #RussianSoulSundays are the best thing since sliced bread. She also has her own YouTube family channel, Meet the Blussians.

Lise Ragbir is an Austin-based writer, curator and arts and cultural administrator. Born and raised in Montreal, she is a first-generation Canadian of Trinidadian-descent. She is working on novel and a collection of essays that explore notions of identity within the Caribbean Diaspora.

Angie Sanders is the adoptive mom of her amazing biracial son. Waiting to be matched, she started an Adoptive Parents Support Group that now has over 260 families. She’s passionate about adoption and has spoken at KPCC’s Crawford Family Forum, Vista Del Mar and Heartsent Adoption Agency. As a certified parent educator with Lori Petro’s Teach Through Love, she helps parents build a deeper connection with their children through workshops and coaching.

Regina Wellman is the creator of BiracialBoom.com, a website dedicated to parents raising Biracial children. Regina graduated from Wright State University and works full time. She has been married for 31 years to Ken and has two sons, Ryan and Sean. Her Beautiful Interracial family is the light of her life.

Code Switching as a Mixed-Race Reality: Speaking Truth and Speaking to Power

Jackie Graves, a tenured English instructor at Laney College, writes personal essays, plays, fiction, poetry, and memoir. Her work has appeared in African Voices, Bum Rush the Page: A Def Poetry Jam, and onstage performances include the Guerrilla Jazz Collective and Strong Current Dance Company. She has received a City of Oakland Spoken Word Fellowship, and residencies at Djerassi, Jentel, Soapstone Writers Residency for Women, and Julia and David White Artist Colony in Costa Rica.

Dmae Roberts is a writer/producer who received two Peabody Awards for her documentary Mei Mei, a Daughter’s Song and the Crossing East series. She received the Dr. Suzanne Ahn Civil Rights and Social Justice award from the Asian American Journalists Association and is a USA Fellow. She’s been published in Oregon Humanities, The Sun, Where Are You From? (Thymos Group) and Mothering in East Asian Communities (Demeter Press). Her book is The Letting Go Trilogies: Stories of a Mixed-Race Family.

Aaron Samuels is a Cave Canem fellow and author of the book Yarmulkes & Fitted Caps. An alumnus of the Providence Youth Poetry Slam, Aaron has coached youth poets in Providence, Boston, and DC. Mixed Millennials: Changing What Mixed-Race Means

Maya’s an undergraduate student at East Carolina University double majoring in Social Work and English. Besides leading an interfaith organization and co-leading a spoken word organization on campus, Maya has published pieces about mixed race identity in Expressions Magazine, and has written pieces for ECU’s Tunnel of Oppression. She advocates for multiracial identity in video content such as #ECUWithoutMe and #Mixstory campaigns. She also has pieces published online in AltFem Magazine and Mixed Race Daily.

Jenifer Logia served as director of Mixed Student Union at UCLA for two years, helped organize the first annual Mixed Heritage Conference at UCLA, and is the current President and founder of the UCLA Mixed Alumni Association. She now works for the County of San Mateo, engaging predominantly low-income Latino residents in a variety of community development initiatives in the Bay Area.

Via Perkins is a multidisciplinary artist from the Boston area. In 2014, she set out to find her father’s side of the family, whom she had been estranged from. This personal journey sparked the creation of Strange Kindred, a collection of poetry on race, family, and the collision of black and white.

N.Laurence is a co-founder of Mixed Race Politics and a freelance web developer/designer. A mixed queer introvert, they are committed to creating and contributing to spaces that are queer-friendly, anti-racist, body-positive, feminist, and non-ableist. When they aren’t working, they can be found writing, drawing, reading, accidentally falling into the internet, accidentally taking the scenic route, and watching/over-analyzing lots of TV.

Andrea Venkatesan is the CEO of Mixed Race Politics, a proud alumna of the University of Miami, and a wanderlustress. She is passionate about integrating fourth-wave feminist values with the arts and politics, and firmly believes that creative, intelligent, and responsible media is a perfect way to start meaningful conversations that can create lasting, sociopolitical change for the better.

A short film about three Japanese women who emigrated to the US in the 1950s as war brides of American men. Their recollections are further refracted through the eyes of their Japanese-American daughters — a photojournalist, a newspaper editor, and a freelance journalist. Personal photographs and visuals from US archival sources help bring to life this fascinating episode in US history.

Lucy Craft, Kathryn Tolbert and Karen Kasmauski jointly directed the film. Lucy is a TV producer in Tokyo with CBS News. Kathryn is an editor with The Washington Post. Karen – formerly with the National Geographic – is now a freelance photographer and educator.

Lucy has worked as a freelance journalist in Tokyo for over 30 years. Her work can be seen/heard on CBS News and NPR. “Fall Seven” is her first foray into film.

Born on a U.S. Naval base in Yokosuka, Japan, Karen Kasmauski is the daughter of Steve, a career sailor who served in three wars, and Emiko, who still lives near the base in Norfolk, Va. Inspired by her father’s love of photography, Karen spent most of her career as a contract photographer at National Geographic, where she broke new ground covering fields from medicine to migration. Her work has taken her to every continent except Antarctica. This documentary is an attempt to better understand a mother who often seemed more like a neighbor than family.

Kathryn has worked for The Associated Press, The Boston Globe and The Washington Post as a reporter and editor. When she worked for the AP in Tokyo, and later for The Washington Post’s Tokyo Bureau, she often wrote about Japanese women. The war bride story is one she has known she should tell, but looking into the lives of others comes more naturally than delving into her own mother’s. Working with Lucy, Karen and the Blue Chalk team has made it possible to finally tell her story.

From filling out ethnicity sections in college applications to introducing lunch trades with pre-trending Japanese food on the grade school playground, before the United Colors of Benetton effect took hold, being the bi-product of an interracial couple was new. Nobody was talking about it, especially in suburban America. Before Obama and yes, Keanu came along, there was no half-anything to admire as a role model, particularly a female one. It’s really no surprise that my best friend growing up was also half-Japanese due to our relatable childhood experiences. Kim Loo Sisters

An intimate, warm-hearted story about four biracial sisters who broke through the ‘bamboo ceiling’ of American mainstream entertainment to become the first Asian American act to star in Broadway musical revues. They shared top billing with Frank Sinatra, The Three Stooges, Jackie Gleason and Ann Miller. They are also my mother and my three maternal aunts.

The Kimmies, as they were called, cut their theatrical teeth in kiddie revues in their hometown of Minneapolis, MN, graduated to a family act on vaudeville circuits across the country, and landed on the Broadway stage and Hollywood screen as a jazz vocal quartet who specialized in swing music. When one of the sisters left the act to marry the son of the vice president of Nationalist China and witnessed the Chinese Civil War of 1945-1949 first-hand, her three siblings carried on as the three Kim Loo Sisters — “the Chinese Andrews Sisters — and joined the USO to perform for American and Allied troops stationed in Europe during the Second World War.

Maya Osborne: Confessions of a Quadroon

Maya Osborne:Confessions of a Quadroon is a 12 minute documentary short about 20-year old mixed raced Bard student/ spoken word artist Maya Osborne. The film is centered around a slam poetry performance of her most noted poem at the NuYoRican Poets cafe in NYC. This piece features Maya’s first person account of her struggles with her biracial identity, along with both her mother and father’s personal perspectives. They are separated.

Former radio broadcasting veteran, Barry Mayo is a photographer/documentarian whose work primarily addresses issues of race in both still photography and film. In addition to the photographic documentation of his travels, Mayo spent a year at the International Center of Photography where he focused his work on the offspring of mixed raced unions. He’ll be starting principal photography on his next project in April, looking at the subjects of both transgender and mixed race identity.
